INTERNET AND ITS INFLUENCE ON THE SOCIETY
What is internet?
The Internet is a vast network that connects computers all over the world. Through the Internet, people can share information and communicate from anywhere with an Internet connection.
The first workable prototype of the Internet came in the late 1960s with the creation of ARPANET, or the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network. Originally funded by the U.S. Department of Defense, ARPANET used packet switching to allow multiple computers to communicate on a single network.
How internet have changed the world?
The Internet has turned our existence upside down. It has revolutionized communications, to the extent that it is now our preferred medium of everyday communication. In almost everything we do, we use the Internet. Ordering a pizza, buying a television, sharing a moment with a friend, sending a picture over instant messaging. Before the Internet, if you wanted to keep up with the news, you had to walk down to the newsstand when it opened in the morning and buy a local edition reporting what had happened the previous day. But today a click or two is enough to read your local paper and any news source from anywhere in the world, updated up to the minute.
Advantages of using internet:
The Internet is a global network system that has dramatically transformed trade and communication. The network connects all of the world's computer systems and enables them to interact efficiently. Although its popularity rose gradually, about half of the world's population now utilizes the Internet for daily purposes.
The Internet pervades our daily lives, from reserving plane tickets to purchasing a pair of socks. And without it, the rise of some of the world's largest corporations, such as Facebook, Microsoft, and Amazon, would have been inconceivable.
However, as the saying goes, "with every blessing comes a curse" and the Internet is no different. It has simplified our lives, yet whether intentionally or not, we have all become its slaves. Let's take a look at some of the Internet's perks and pitfalls here.
Disadvantages of using internet:
When using social networking websites or online banking services, consumers enter their personal information including email address, bank account numbers, credit card details, and phone numbers. This information can be easily accessed by an expert in software or a hacker, resulting in privacy exposure. Viruses are designed by hackers to infiltrate computer systems and wreak havoc.
No doubt internet has made people its slave, reducing on to offline social abilities. Elders and children alike have been impacted. Mobile phone apps like YouTube allow children as young as two to see online videos. They are spending more time in front of a computer screen, which has stifled their cerebral development.
Every existing material has its own pros and cons, and so does internet. Especially with the advent of Artificial Intelligence, internet has made things beyond imagination come to reality. What is important is understanding its significance in our lives and using it more wisely is essential. Our lives may be transformed if we utilize it correctly, but if we misuse it, it can be disastrous. It's important to educate and encourage your children and family members to use the Internet before allowing them to use it themselves.
